With the arrival of autumn, cool, dry air presents new challenges for your skin. Decreased humidity, cold winds, and temperature fluctuations cause the skin to lose its natural moisture, leading to dryness, roughness, or even flakiness. If you want your skin to remain soft and radiant throughout the season, you need to make a few adjustments to your skincare routine.
1. Why does skin become dry in autumn?
Humidity levels drop during autumn, a factor that strips away the skin’s protective surface oils. When this protective barrier is compromised, moisture escapes from the deeper layers of the skin, resulting in dryness and sensitivity.
2. Choosing the Right Cleanser
Using harsh cleansers or alcohol-based soaps during this season is a mistake. Gentle, cream- or oil-based cleansers—such as “cream cleansers”—are the best choice. If you have oily skin, opt for lightweight foaming products instead of drying gels.
3. Hydration and Moisturizing
One of the most important parts of an autumn skincare routine is the regular use of hydrators. A hydrator containing hyaluronic acid or glycerin helps retain moisture in the skin. Follow this with a moisturizer that is richer than the one you used in summer to lock in that hydration.
4. Don’t forget sunscreen!
Ultraviolet rays are present even on cloudy days; therefore, sunscreen should be used throughout the year. For autumn, lightweight sunscreens with an SPF of 30 or higher are ideal.
5. Masks and gentle scrubs
Using hydrating masks (such as honey and yogurt or aloe vera) twice a week is recommended. Additionally, using a gentle scrub—rather than a harsh exfoliant—helps remove dead skin cells, allowing skincare products to be absorbed more effectively.
6. Nutrition and adequate hydration
A diet rich in healthy fatty acids (found in fish, nuts, and avocados), combined with drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, keeps the skin fresh and revitalized from within.
